From the frosty temps of winter in Arkansas (okay, not THAT frosty) we've transitioned to the humid heat of the tropics. Thankfully this is the best time to visit Thailand as the temps are pretty mild throughout. At midnight on January 7th we arrived, weary after 32 hours of travel. We were picked up by YWAM staff from the Bangkok campus and transported in semi-enclosed truck beds to rooms set up for us by their hospitable staff. The smells and sights we encountered brought back memories to both Josh and I of previous time spent in this country. The damp odors of earth and plants, the acrid smoke of wood and trash burning, diesel, fried food. Ava fell fast asleep on my lap while Marin enthusiastically asked about every new thing she saw. (She had slept quite a bit on the plane trips, something we regretted later that night)
We spent our first couple days trying to overcome jet lag, tasting new foods, beginning our study of the Thai language and culture. Our teams' enthusiasms are high and we are so grateful for this humble, servant-hearted group of individuals. Already we see their particular gifts rising to the occasion.
As a way to begin interacting with Thai people and immersing ourselves in the culture we participated in a scavenger hunt near to the YWAM Bangkok office. Included are a couple pictures of some team members enjoying a local snack, fried grasshoppers. Bon Appetit!
