My Sundays usually consist of teaching a Sunday school class to a handful of teenagers. Easter Sunday, however, was different. I went to jail, dragging the DTS students and staff along with me. The difference between us and those in the orange jumpsuits was that we were allowed to leave after a few hours.
After singing a few common hymns (keep in mind this is a group of inmates without any instrumental accompaniment), one of our guys, Brian, stood to share the story of how God became a reality to him. I followed him with a brief sermon about Christ's resurrection. I was shocked as I observed these convicts intently listening to Brian, and then to me as well. 30 or 40 of society's "worst" being quiet and paying attention? No joke, I don't get that kind of behavior from my Sunday school students! Does the irony strike anyone else when I say I wish my class would act more like criminals?
